The goal of circularity addresses a host of environmental challenges: resource depletion, accumulation of waste in landfills, ecological impacts of waste accumulation in the environment, greenhouse gas emissions, and human health impacts. However, addressing these challenges requires big infrastructure changes and new ways of prioritizing R&D investments, deployment, and policy strategies. This presentation will explore the practical and technological constraints and future needs to get closer to zero-waste for organic material and plastic waste, as well as some of the approaches that can be used to compare competing approaches and gauge our progress.
