Engineering plays a critical role in transitioning innovative technologies into operational systems for the warfighter. These systems are complex, infusing advanced technology with lifecycle considerations such as manufacturing, re-use, modularity, and maintenance to be operationally deployable. The siloed engineering discipline approach fails to meet the hastened pace required by our warfighters and expected by our executive leaders. Digital engineering (DE) tools such as models, simulations, digital threads, and digital twins provide the means to break down engineering silos, reduce engineering risks, and accelerate delivery. Achieving these benefits requires strong government-industry-academia engagement to develop and mature the foundational standards underpinning these tools. This briefing will discuss what the Digital Engineering, Modeling, and Simulation Directorate within the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering is doing, the success the department has already had, and where the “standards first” vision is applied in the use of modeling and simulation for engineering on digital ecosystems. DE success stories have demonstrated 10 times savings in cost and time. The department will need to continue the work of adoption to realize these benefits across the spectrum.
